The Egyptian government has announced its commitment to support Nile Basin countries, including Uganda, in developing hydroelectric dams along the shared Nile River.

The pledge was made by Egypt’s Minister of Water, Professor Hani Sewilam, during the official inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, an event attended by global leaders and dignitaries.

The $1 billion museum, opened under the theme “Celebrating Egypt’s Ancient Civilizations,” was hailed as a symbol of Egypt’s cultural heritage and modern progress. Speaking to attendees, Sewilam revealed that Egypt is ready to invest $100 million (approximately Shs360 billion in Ugandan currency) to assist Nile Basin nations in harnessing the river for sustainable energy.

Representing President Yoweri Museveni, Uganda’s Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja attended the event and held bilateral discussions with Prof. Sewilam, accompanied by her delegation, including Deputy Ambassador to Egypt, Lt. Gen. Charles Angina.

During their meeting, Nabbanja commended Egypt for the planned support but also emphasized the importance of environmental conservation along the Nile, urging Egyptian authorities to assist Uganda in safeguarding the river’s ecosystems.

Meanwhile, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi addressed the gathering, describing the museum’s opening as a historic milestone. “Today we celebrate the Grand Egyptian Museum and embark on a new chapter in our history and future,” he said.

The $1 billion museum is set to open its doors to the public next week, offering visitors access to its extensive galleries and exhibitions, showcasing Egypt’s rich civilization and cultural achievements.
