First time legislator Derrick Nyeko of Makindye East in the 11th parliament Hon. Derrick Nyeko has announced that he will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming General Elections.

Nyeko who joined parliament on the NUP ticket made the announcement via his social media pages revealing that after deep reflection, he made the very difficult decision not join the race in 2026.

He didn’t reveal the exact reasons for this decision but has thanked all those who believed and entrusted him to serve them as their Member of parliament in the 11th parliament sitting on the opposition wing.

“I know this decision may not be easy for my team and supporters to receive, especially after our strong belief that we would once again win the Makindye East MP east. However, after deep reflection, i have made the difficult decision not to offer myself for election in the coming polls’- Nyeko said in a statement.

I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to all who have believed in me throughout the years I have been entrusted with leadership. It is with a heart full of joy that I have served you with honour, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust of your vote.” Hon Nyeko Derrick (@NyekoHon) Posted On September 2, 2025

Ahead of the General Elections, National Unity Platform the then less than 6 months old political party swept through Central Uganda (Buganda) dominating MP positions and local government levels but the general public believes many of those who came through the wave have dismally performed even in parliament.

Some Lord councilors on NUP ticket in KCCA left the country for greener pastures while the first time Members of parliament like Abubaker Kawalya (Lubaga North), Aloysius Mukasa (Lubaga South), Bashir Kazibwe (Kawempe South) and Derrick Nyeko (Makindye East) have not performed to the voters’ expectations.

Meanwhile, Musician and Bobi Wine’s comrade, Ali Buken, also known as Nubian Li, was endorsed by the National Unity Platform (NUP) party to contest for Mayor of Nakawa division.

His opponent for the same party ticket and the incumbent mayor, Paul Mugambe, has finally spoken out following the release of the results.

Mugambe says he was not surprised that Nubian Li was chosen over him, revealing that Nubian Li holds a more significant position in the party.

He also explained that Nubian Li had been bragging about securing the party flag long before the vetting process took place.

“I was not surprised that my counterpart, Ali Buken, popularly known as Nubian Li, was chosen as the NUP flagbearer for the Nakawa Division mayoral seat in the 2026 general elections, given his status in the party. He had already been bragging about securing it,” Mugambe explained during a discussion with NTV Uganda.

Paul Mugambe demanded that the party release the specific results of the different candidates to show how they performed both in vetting and on the ground.

“We would welcome the party’s transparency in releasing the results of how each aspirant performed, both in the vetting process and at the grassroots level, to help clear the air,” he explained.

Mugambe says his constituents will determine if he contests independently or steps aside for Nubian Li.
