Fredrick Ochieng seems to be trapped in a series of unfortunate events, and he believes he knows the reason. Ever since the day he chose to buy himself several bottles of beer—Tusker Lager, to be precise—instead of sending money to his mother, his life has been on a downward spiral.
His mother has not spoken to him since that day. It wasn’t an emergency; she simply wanted to buy a handbag, yet Fredrick’s refusal left her feeling betrayed. Her resentment seems to go beyond mere disappointment, as she openly criticizes him in public, sometimes calling him a “useless idiot.”
First, Fredrick lost his job as a county employee. While trying to understand the strange circumstances behind his dismissal, he clashed with the HR manager, resorting to physical blows and kicks. As a result, he was banned from entering the office ever again.
Adding to his misfortune, his long-term girlfriend left him for a local bar owner. Fredrick has since taken up “Mjengo” work, earning peanuts for grueling labor.
