Breaking news has emerged from Uganda’s police force, Commissioner of Police in charge of Human Resources, Elidad Mugume, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID).

He is expected to appear in a few hours before the Anti-Corruption Court, facing charges related to ghost police officers. Mugume, who oversees police personnel, has been accused of being involved in creating or maintaining fake officers on the police payroll.

Highly placed sources within the police force have revealed that Mugume had previously been transferred to serve in other ministries multiple times. However, according to insiders, he allegedly bribed officials to cancel these transfers and remain in his current position.

“This man was transferred three times to leave police but he bribed heavily to remain in his position. Now it’s Luzira that will transfer him,” said a source at Naguru, referring to the central police administration.

The arrest has sent shockwaves through the Uganda Police Force, as Mugume held a critical role in managing personnel.

Allegations of ghost officers have long been a source of concern, with fake names on the payroll draining public funds meant for salaries and operations. The case is expected to be closely watched by the public, anti-corruption bodies, and government officials alike.

If proven guilty, the charges against Mugume could result in severe penalties, including imprisonment and permanent removal from public service. The arrest is being seen as a strong signal from the authorities that corruption, even at senior levels of the police, will not be tolerated.

Citizens are now waiting to see how the case unfolds in court, as it raises important questions about accountability and transparency within Uganda’s security services.
