In today’s fast-paced digital world, paperwork and long queues can be frustrating especially when it comes to something as important as your National ID. Thankfully, Uganda’s National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has stepped up its game by introducing a more convenient way to update your ID details: online applications.
Whether you’ve changed your name, discovered a date-of-birth error, or need to correct your gender or citizenship status, keeping your ID accurate is essential not just for identification, but also for accessing vital services like banking, voting, and travel. Fortunately, you can now begin this process from the comfort of your home.
Gone are the days of waiting in line just to start your application. With NIRA’s Online Services Portal, you can initiate your request remotely. To begin, visit https://www.nira.go.ug and click on the Online Application Portal. From the list of services, select “Change of Particulars,” which includes updates for name, date of birth, gender, marital status, and citizenship details.
Once on the portal, you’ll be required to fill in your National Identification Number (NIN), the specific details you wish to change, and your current contact information. Make sure to provide accurate explanations and information to avoid delays in processing.
After filling in the form, you must upload supporting documentation depending on the change being requested. These may include a birth certificate, marriage certificate, statutory declaration or affidavit, LC1 or RDC letter, and a copy of your old National ID. Ensure the scanned documents are clear and legible to prevent rejection.
When you’ve completed the application and uploaded all required files, submit the form and take note of the unique Application ID generated. This reference number is essential for follow-up and must be presented when you go for biometric verification.
It’s important to note that although the application starts online, you are still required to visit a NIRA office in person. During this visit, your fingerprints, photograph, and iris scan will be taken, and original documents will be verified.
Additionally, applicants are required to pay a fee of UGX 200,000 for any change or correction of records. This payment can be made through mobile money or banking services using URA payment codes. You must present a payment receipt at the NIRA office as proof of payment.
After completing all the steps, you can expect to receive your new National ID within 4 to 6 weeks. However, due to high demand, there may be delays. NIRA has also announced plans to introduce a home delivery service for completed IDs, offering even more convenience for applicants.
This shift to digital processes reflects Uganda’s growing commitment to efficient, citizen-centered public services. The ability to change your National ID details online is not only a timesaver but also a significant step forward in modernizing the country’s identity management system.
So, if your ID contains outdated or incorrect information, don’t wait. Take advantage of the new system start your application online, follow through with biometric verification, and soon, you’ll have an accurate and updated National ID that reflects who you truly are.
