In a development that has stirred Uganda’s political scene, Hon. Muhammed Nsereko has launched a new political party—the Ecological Party of Uganda. This unexpected move comes after his decision to remain independent from existing opposition coalitions aiming to challenge President Yoweri Museveni in the 2026 general elections.

A well-known independent voice in Parliament, Nsereko is now setting his sights higher, officially declaring his intention to run for president under the banner of his newly formed party. This marks a significant evolution in his political career.

Sharing his vision, Nsereko announced that the Ecological Party will soon initiate a nationwide recruitment campaign. The goal is to establish a strong presence across the country by fielding candidates in various constituencies, ultimately positioning the party as Uganda’s leading progressive force.

Setting his party apart, Nsereko emphasized its commitment to peace and non-violence, rejecting the confrontational approach often linked to some opposition movements, including the National Unity Platform (NUP). He described the Ecological Party as a non-sectarian platform—inclusive, and open to Ugandans from all backgrounds.

With a focus on unity, reform, and a departure from the politics-as-usual approach, Nsereko aims to offer a fresh alternative to Ugandans who feel disillusioned with the current system. As the 2026 elections draw closer, the spotlight is turning to whether this new political force can build real momentum.

Though it’s too early to predict the long-term impact of the Ecological Party, one thing is certain: Nsereko’s bold move has introduced a new dynamic into Uganda’s political landscape—and raised the stakes on the road to 2026.
