Tension is once again high in Kireka D village, Kira Municipality, as National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters gathered for a repeat vote to choose their flag bearer for the 2026 village chairperson elections.
The new poll was ordered following violent clashes during the initial vote on Tuesday, which left one candidate injured and sparked accusations of rigging.
The main contest is between Mr. Moses Haumba, who is said to be affiliated with the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political movement associated with Uganda’s military commander Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and the current chairperson, Mr. Umar Muyanja, who is believed to have close ties to President Yoweri Museveni.
In a video posted by Daily Monitor, large groups of supporters could be seen chanting and marching through the village before police arrived to calm the situation.
Some residents could be heard expressing frustration at the division the election has caused, as supporters of both camps continue to accuse each other of intimidation and vote tampering.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions within the ruling party, as internal competition ahead of the 2026 elections begins to take shape.
Security forces remained on high alert as voting proceeded under tight surveillance to avoid a repeat of the earlier violence.
