Bobi Wine Links Mathias Mpuuga To The Masaka Bijambiya – Reveals Mpuuga Led To Ssegirinya And Ssewanyana’s Arrest

The National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi, has made explosive claims implicating former Deputy President and current legislator, Hon Mathias Mpuuga, in the controversial 2021 bijambiya (machete killings) case in Masaka.

Speaking during a press conference held at the NUP headquarters today, Mr Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, revealed that the late Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya confided in him prior to his death, alleging that Mpuuga orchestrated the legal and political setup that led to the incarceration of both him and Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana.

“The late Hon Ssegirinya told me, with deep pain, that it was Hon Mpuuga who was behind the plan to pin them in the Masaka bijambiya case. He said Mpuuga was working to ensure that they remain behind bars for a long time,” Mr Kyagulanyi stated.

Adding further weight to the allegations, MP Allan Ssewanyana, who was present at the press conference, was handed the microphone and unequivocally confirmed the claims.

“Yes, I agree with what the president has said. It is true — I now know that Mpuuga was behind everything,” Ssewanyana declared, drawing gasps from the assembled crowd.

The bijambiya attacks that swept across Masaka sub-region in mid-2021 left scores of residents dead and others injured in a wave of nighttime machete killings that shocked the nation.

MPs Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana were arrested and charged in connection with the attacks, sparking national and international outrage. Both men consistently denied the allegations, saying they were victims of political persecution.

The latest revelations are likely to further inflame the ongoing tensions within the opposition, particularly between Kyagulanyi’s camp and Mpuuga, who was recently ousted from his leadership role in Parliament amid internal party wrangles.

At the time of publishing, Hon Mpuuga had not publicly responded to the allegations. Attempts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful.

Political analysts say the public accusations could deepen divisions within NUP and complicate efforts to present a united front ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The death of Ssegirinya, who had been battling illness since his release from prison, remains a painful scar for the opposition — and these fresh allegations may open yet another political storm.
