In a bold move to combat HIV stigma and improve education among young people, Action For Fundamental Change And Development (AFFCAD) has launched the “Empower Communities Against HIV Stigma” project. This groundbreaking initiative aims to reach 13,750 young people in Kampala district, one of the most vulnerable areas in Uganda.

The project’s objective is to improve HIV education and reduce stigma among young people, who are disproportionately affected by the epidemic. By targeting teachers and community leaders, AFFCAD seeks to create a ripple effect that will resonate throughout the community.

One of the project’s key activities is community-led baseline research. This involves conducting a baseline survey to identify key areas of need regarding HIV knowledge and understanding in target communities.

By engaging community members in the research process, AFFCAD ensures that the project’s interventions are tailored to the specific needs of the community.

Another critical component of the project is teacher training sessions. AFFCAD will conduct training sessions for 50 teachers, focusing on effective SRHR education strategies.

These strategies include reducing stigma around HIV, normalizing testing, and promoting female empowerment. By empowering teachers with the knowledge and skills to deliver comprehensive SRHR education, AFFCAD aims to create a safe and supportive learning environment for students.

The project’s impact will be felt far beyond the classroom. By training 50 community leaders, AFFCAD will create a network of champions who can promote HIV education and reduce stigma within their communities. These community leaders will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to engage their peers, families, and community members in conversations about HIV and SRHR.

The “Empower Communities Against HIV Stigma” project contributes to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Uganda’s National Development Plan III, and Uganda Vision 2040.

By addressing the social and economic determinants of health, AFFCAD is working towards a future where all Ugandans can enjoy good health and well-being.

As AFFCAD embarks on this ambitious project, it is clear that empowering communities against HIV stigma requires a multifaceted approach. By engaging teachers, community leaders, and young people, AFFCAD is creating a comprehensive and sustainable solution to this complex problem.

With its innovative approach and commitment to community-led development, AFFCAD is poised to make a lasting impact in the fight against HIV stigma in Uganda.
