A somber moment has gripped Rubaga Hospital as the body of Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya was taken out of the ICU room, marking the tragic end of his battle with a prolonged illness.
Hospital officials are awaiting further communication from his family before proceeding with the next steps for his release.
The emotional scene has left many in shock and mourning as they process the loss of a leader who dedicated much of his life to serving his community.
Ssegirinya’s death was officially confirmed at 12:10 pm on January 9, 2025, by Lubaga Hospital after complications from his long-standing illness.
The Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, had earlier shared that Ssegirinya’s health had deteriorated in recent days, prompting doctors to limit visits to prevent infections.
Known for his strong advocacy for the underprivileged, Ssegirinya’s death has left a void in the political landscape of Uganda.
His colleague, Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, recalling their shared experiences of incarceration.
“It shouldn’t have been you, Ssegirinya, to die at this time,” he said, visibly emotional. Ssewanyana’s heartfelt words highlight the deep bond they shared, especially during their 500 days in jail.
Despite the controversy surrounding his condition in the days leading up to his death, with some claiming he was “only brain dead,” the nation now faces the painful reality of Ssegirinya’s passing, as tributes continue to pour in from all corners of the country.
