A Christmas Eve prayer session turned tragic in Serere District, Uganda when a pastor succumbed to injuries after being attacked by a man reportedly possessed by demons during a spiritual ritual.
The incident happened at Agule Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) Church in Ocuko Village, Kateta Sub-county. The victim, 52-year-old Pastor John Michael Ekamu, was leading prayers to cleanse the suspect, Osagani, 30, of alleged demonic attacks.
Osagani, the son of Simon Ogwang from Mutebe Village, had reportedly traveled from Kampala on December 24, 2024, to seek deliverance. According to East Kyoga Regional Police Commander Damalie Nachuha, Osagani’s father took him directly to the church, claiming his son was under spiritual attack.
During the intense prayer session, Osagani reportedly kicked Pastor Ekamu, causing him to fall. However, the prayers continued, and the pastor remained at the church overnight. On Christmas morning, while delivering a sermon around 8 a.m., Pastor Ekamu collapsed on the pulpit.
Concerned worshippers suggested taking him to a health center, but he insisted he was fine, declaring, “the devil has been defeated.”
His condition deteriorated, and he was rushed to Serere Health Center IV, where an X-ray revealed severe injuries, including cuts to his pancreas. Despite efforts to save his life through surgery, Pastor Ekamu passed away around 3 p.m.
The body was taken to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination as investigations continue. The suspect, now in police custody, is assisting with inquiries into the incident.
