Uganda has made several gains since she gained independence in 1962. Ranging from self-liberation to self-governace, establishment of governance institutions and progressive socioeconomic development among others, the country is proud of immense transformation that has helped citizens.
However, despite the aforementioned transformation, the country is grappling with a myriad of problems which has made her known beyond boundaries of continent of Africa.
A number of the problems have been brought about by governance and lack of sufficient political will. They include;
1. Lack of transparency and accountability
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) established that there were gaps in transparency and accountability outcome in Uganda.
The agency laid down strategies that addressed this challenge in 2017.Corruption has been observed in some government ministries, institutions and other public and private entities.
Most political institutions like the Executive have been accused by the opposition of failing to provide accountability over employment opportunities and management of resources.
2. Nepotism
Tied to corruption, nepotism in government parastatals and institutions is a rampant vice that has caused discontent amongst citizens.Directors of government agencies have been favouring relatives and friends in distributing employment opportunities and resources.
3. Autocratic Political Leadership
World over, countries have been pointing fingers of accusation at current topmost leadership of the country for high-handed mode of rule where, alternative voices and dissidents are cowed into silence using law enforcement agencies.
4. Diseases and Poverty
Communicable and non-communicable diseases are still ravaging Uganda. Infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, malaria, dengue fever and typhoid among many others are still a thorn in flesh for citizens.
Non-communicable/lifestyle diseases like hypertension, cancer and diabetes are other problems facing Uganda.Poverty levels in Uganda are high. Majority of citizens live below poverty line. This is as a result of unemployment, lack of basic needs and insufficient resources.
