“Minister Sarah Mateke Died Similarly Like How Gen Aronda Nyakairima Died” Museveni Cites Similarity

President Yoweri Museveni has revealed a startling connection between the recent death of State Minister for Defense Sarah Mateke and the passing of former Internal Affairs Minister General Aronda Nyakairima in 2015.

According to Report, Speaking at a memorial service for Mateke, Museveni shared that she was scheduled to attend the same security conference in South Korea that Aronda had attended before his death.

“Sarah was apparently supposed to travel to South Korea on the same conference from which Aronda died when he was coming back,” Museveni stated.

The President expressed relief that Mateke did not board the plane, as her health condition might have led to a similar outcome as Aronda’s.Aronda passed away on a flight from Seoul to Dubai in September 2015, reportedly due to heart-related complications.

Museveni admitted he was unaware of both ministers’ health issues, saying, “When Aronda died on the plane, I didn’t know that he had a medical condition that was a problem, I didn’t know.”

The President emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups for government officials.

“If I had known, I would have stopped him from travelling those long distances,” Museveni remarked, referring to Aronda’s fatal journey.Mateke, who was 50 years old, died on September 7, 2024, after suffering a heart attack.

The President praised Mateke’s character, describing her as a calm and reflective person who spoke only when necessary.”She listened more to others than she talked,” Museveni observed.

He noted that despite representing Kisoro, a district he characterized as “naturally very belligerent and quarrelsome,” Mateke was known for her peaceful demeanor.”She was never quarrelsome and peacefully related well with everyone,” the President said.Museveni expressed surprise at the unanimous praise for Mateke, stating it was uncommon for Ugandans to agree on someone’s goodness.

The President urged all leaders to prioritize their health and adjust their lifestyles based on medical advice.He suggested that if health conditions are kept secret, it can lead to dangerous situations, as in Aronda’s case.

Museveni cautioned against long-distance air travel for those with certain medical conditions.The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, highlighted the recent losses in the 11th Parliament, mentioning five members who had passed away since 2022.

Among called for unity among MPs, saying, “We are living on borrowed time, and at any moment, God can call us back.”Vice President Jessica Alupo remembered Mateke as a collaborative and friendly colleague during their time in the 9th Parliament.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja praised Mateke’s dedication to youth education and empowerment through her foundation.Opposition leader Joel Ssenyonyi acknowledged Mateke’s calm approach and integrity, noting her absence from corruption scandals.

The memorial service at Parliament was part of a series of events honoring Mateke’s life and service.Her body will be taken to Kisoro district for final rites and burial on September 14, 2024.
