Francis Zaake, the Member of Parliament for Mityana Municipality, found himself detained overnight at Kampala’s Central Police Station following his arrest along with two other MPs from the National Unity Platform (NUP) on Monday. The arrests took place at the NUP offices in Makerere-Kavule, conducted by security forces.

In addition to Zaake, those arrested were Hassan Kirumira representing Katikamu South and Francis Tebandeke from Bbaale County. The situation remained tense for nearly six hours until Zaake, who had barricaded himself inside a vehicle with lowered windows, eventually agreed to speak with his lawyers.

Erias Lukwago, Kampala’s Lord Mayor, arrived later to provide legal representation for Zaake. As of the latest updates, Zaake faces charges related to driving without a valid permit.

Earlier in the day, police justified their presence at the NUP headquarters ahead of a planned march to parliament. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, the party’s president, condemned the arrests during a press briefing from his residence in Magere. He affirmed NUP’s resolve to continue advocating for their rights despite intimidation tactics from authorities.

NUP had intended to hold a press conference at their offices in Makerere-Kavule to communicate their plans to supporters, but the event was abruptly halted by a police raid, preventing them from addressing the media.
