At least nine individuals tragically lost their lives in a devastating incident involving a police vehicle from Kikuube District. The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon along the Kabaale-Kiziranfumbi Road in Hoima District, leaving a profound impact on the local community and law enforcement authorities.

Reports indicate that the vehicle, carrying a mix of civilians and police officers, including a driver identified as Raymond, veered off course in Kiteegwa B Village, Kabaale Sub-county. Among the deceased were four officers, including an investigator, and four civilians, including a one-month-old infant and three murder suspects. The crash, which occurred around 3pm, resulted in the immediate death of seven individuals at the scene, while two more succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital (HRRH).

Amlan Tumusiime, the Resident Commissioner (RDC) of Kikuube District, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, particularly mourning the officers from Kikuube Central Police Station who were on duty at the time. Faridah Ndagano, the district’s communications officer, provided updates on the casualties, highlighting the severity of the incident.

The suspects involved were reportedly linked to the murder of Apollo Mwesigye, a resident of Kabegaramire Village in Kabwoya Sub-County. The police officers accompanying the civilians were en route to the village for a crime scene reconstruction when the tragic accident occurred.

Eyewitnesses recounted the chaotic aftermath of the crash, with emergency responders and local residents working to extract bodies from the wreckage. Initial speculation pointed to speeding as a possible cause, although formal investigations by authorities were underway to determine the exact circumstances.

Julius Hakiza, the spokesperson for the Albertine Region Police, acknowledged the loss of their colleagues, emphasizing that the officers were fulfilling their official duties when the accident happened. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Hoima Hospital Police Mortuary for further procedures.

This incident follows a recent string of fatal accidents in the region, prompting RDC Tumusiime to issue a cautionary statement regarding the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. He referenced a recent report by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety of the Uganda Police Force, which highlighted an alarming increase in fatal accidents within the Albertine Region.

As the community mourns and investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the families of the victims and implementing measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
