In a display of assertiveness, Gen Museveni, officially 80 years old, showcased his determination to spotlight the impact of his personal initiatives in popularizing the 4-acre farming model. He convened key government figures, including Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo and Speaker Anita Among, at Kisozi in Gomba district. The purpose? To illustrate the transformative effects his model has had on local households.
Accompanied by several ministers and MPs, Museveni’s objective was clear: to highlight the success of the 4-acre model in combating poverty and fostering wealth creation among rural Ugandans. However, amidst the tour of model villages, some residents voiced concerns about aspects of the model that hadn’t yet reached perfection.
The subsequent media coverage drew the ire of Museveni, particularly the Monitor newspaper, which focused on the negative feedback. Even the state-owned New Vision failed to give his story the prominence he desired. Displeased with the perceived imbalance in reporting, Museveni demanded action.
He promptly reached out to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and Information Minister Chris Baryomunsi, expressing his dissatisfaction. Baryomunsi, though away on official duties, was tasked with addressing the editorial leadership of both newspapers upon his return. The objective was to ensure more favorable coverage of Museveni’s initiatives.
Following Baryomunsi’s return, grilling sessions were held with the leadership of the Monitor and New Vision at the ICT Ministry. Moderating the discussions, Baryomunsi facilitated a resolution aimed at achieving a more balanced portrayal of Museveni’s endeavors.
Acknowledging their shortcomings, editors from both publications committed to improving their coverage. New Vision agreed to feature a makeup story on the front page, while the Monitor committed to publishing multiple articles accompanied by positive visuals highlighting the benefits of Museveni’s interventions.
As Uganda approaches the 2026 elections, Museveni’s sensitivity to media portrayal of his flagship programs is heightened. With initiatives like the 4-acre model, Emyoga, and PDM under scrutiny, expect the veteran leader to be increasingly vigilant against negative publicity.
