National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, famously known as Bobi Wine, has initiated the party’s Nationwide Membership Registration drive, aimed at expanding the national Party register by enrolling our loyal supporters.
Kyagulanyi inaugurated the campaign during the final day of NUP registrars’ and Focal Persons’ training held at the party headquarters in Makerere, Kavule. He took the opportunity to equip the registrars with the necessary materials for the task ahead.
Addressing the assembly, Kyagulanyi emphasized the importance of organization in the current political climate, asserting that the future belongs to those who are well-organized. He urged all leaders to prioritize the organization of the party despite challenges.
Furthermore, he highlighted the resilience of NUP in the face of attempts by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to impede democratic progress, including rumored plans to install General Muhoozi Kainerugaba as President Yoweri Museveni’s successor. Kyagulanyi reiterated NUP’s commitment to confronting what he labeled as tyranny through active participation in elections.
In a statement to the press, Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of Opposition, affirmed the legality of their actions and warned against any security personnel hindering the registration process, emphasizing that they would be held accountable.
He urged NUP supporters to resist intimidation and fully engage in the registration process. David Lewis Rubongoya, the party’s Secretary-General, outlined the campaign’s alignment with the Kunga Campaign initiated in 2022. He emphasized the inclusivity of the campaign, which aims to spread the party’s message of change across all levels of society.
Rubongoya disclosed that the training had attracted registrars from all 146 districts and 353 constituencies. He clarified that the NUP membership card would be available for a nominal fee of only 1000 shillings.
Additionally, Kyagulanyi announced plans for the second phase of a countrywide tour to strengthen grassroots mobilization ahead of the party’s structure-building exercise. This initiative marks the second attempt by NUP to conduct nationwide tours within two years.
The previous campaign faced obstacles when the police banned the tours, citing violations during Kyagulanyi’s speeches. The police accused him of inciting violence, promoting sectarianism, and making illegitimate calls for the removal of the government, leading to the suspension of NUP’s activities.
Despite challenges, NUP remains committed to its mission of promoting democracy and effecting positive change in Uganda.
