There has been mixed reaction among Ugandans upon learning that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) General Kale Kayihura has moved into the agro-processing industry, producing a range of products at his Katebe Business Farm in Kasagama, Lyantonde.

Reports indicate that at his farm, the once-powerful General manages several agro-processing initiatives, including banana and gonja plantations, pastures, beekeeping, horticulture, as well as goat and cattle rearing.

He has expanded into value addition by producing items such as Katebe Yogurt and Gonja Crisps, which are now available in supermarkets and shops nationwide.

The developments have attracted mixed reactions.

@PaulBwengye said, “The market is never saturated or clogged. Your positioning and quality of the product will define and determine your niche against competition. Welcoming the new kid on the block KATEBE YOGURT. Cheers! @KaleKayihura sending you my resume shortly sir!”

“Be careful the way you treat people; you may need them tomorrow,” said George Okiria.

Mukebezi Sarah commented, “We shall support. I love giving Ugandan businesses my money!!!!”

Sylvester Kabombo said, “I think exposing his ownership of the company is not a good idea. It’s better to own it as a proxy.”

Kayihura, who holds the record as Uganda’s longest-serving Inspector General of Police with a 13-year tenure, has remained out of the public eye since his dismissal by President Museveni in March 2018.

After his removal, he was arrested and charged with failing to safeguard war materials and involvement in aiding and abetting the abduction of Rwandese refugees. He was released on bail, and the charges were dropped in August 2023.

Following this, he led a more private and low-profile life. Additionally, in 2021, the Uganda Law Council authorized him to practice law.

General Kale Kayihura’s transition from his role as Uganda’s longest-serving Inspector General of Police to a private life in agro-processing and law practice marks a significant shift in his career. His agro-processing ventures, producing products like Katebe Yogurt and Gonja Crisps, suggest a focus on contributing to the local economy.

Although he faced legal challenges, the dropping of charges allows him to pursue his interests with a fresh start. Kayihura’s new endeavors hint at a quieter, yet impactful chapter in his life.
