Inaugurated on February 17, 2024, by His Excellency, the President of Uganda and Commander-in-Chief, significant transformations have been unveiled at the UPDF Headquarters, marking a pivotal moment in the institution’s evolution.

The restructuring initiative, in accordance with the UPDF Establishment 2021, has led to the revamping of office nomenclatures, signifying a modernized approach to organizational design and functionality.

One notable adjustment is the transition from the traditional title of Defence Spokesperson to the more encompassing role of Defence Information Officer (DPIO) within the ambit of the Defence Public Information Department (DDPIO), as highlighted by Brg. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, the Defence Public Information Officer.

Effective April 5, 2024, the newly adopted titles will come into full force, bringing about a comprehensive overhaul in the nomenclature of UPDF offices.

Some of the notable changes include the rebranding of the Joint Chief of Staff (JCOS) to the Chief of Joint Staff (CJS), reflecting a refined strategic focus within the organization.

Furthermore, the Chief of Personnel and Administration (CPA) has evolved into the Joint Staff Human Resource Management (JS-HRM), aligning with contemporary practices in personnel management.

The transformation also extends to the intelligence sector, with the erstwhile Chief of Military Intelligence (CMI) assuming the designation of Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS), underscoring the broader scope of responsibilities in safeguarding national interests.

In the realm of logistics and engineering, the Chief of Logistics and Engineering (CLE) has been rechristened as the Joint Staff Logistics (JS-LOG), emphasizing the integrated approach towards logistical operations.

Additionally, the Chief of Training and Recruitment (CTR) has transitioned into the Joint Staff Training and Doctrine (JS-TRADOC), reflecting an enhanced emphasis on training methodologies and doctrinal development within the armed forces.

Brig. Gen. Kulayigye emphasized that further elucidation on the revised titles would be provided by the Defence Public Information Officer (DPIO) as per the necessity and in line with the transparency principles upheld by the UPDF.
