President Yoweri Museveni recently emphasized the significant contribution of his longtime ally, John Patrick Amama Mbabazi, despite their brief disagreements which culminated in Mbabazi challenging Museveni in the 2016 general elections. This underscores the adage that “in politics, there are no permanent enemies.”

Speaking at the 50th marriage anniversary celebration of Mbabazi and his wife Jaqueline at Kampala Serena Hotel, Museveni acknowledged the differences he had with Mbabazi and other comrades like Kategaya but highlighted the importance of recognizing past and future contributions. He reminisced about discussions with Kategaya regarding East African Integration, demonstrating his pragmatic approach to relationships within the political sphere.

The relationship between Mbabazi and Museveni soured when Mbabazi aimed to contest Museveni for the flag bearer position within the ruling party, leading to legal challenges regarding the contestation rules. Despite this, Mbabazi announced his presidential ambitions in 2015 and entered the 2016 elections under the Go Forward Movement, facing setbacks both at the ballot and in the Supreme Court.

However, Museveni still commended Mbabazi’s contribution to the broader political struggle, emphasizing the need to assess everyone’s role over time. This acknowledgment extended to Jaqueline Mbabazi, recognizing her support throughout the journey.

Mbabazi reemerged from a period of silence in February 2022, announcing his appointment as chairman of the African Global Security Foundation, indicating a reconciliation with Museveni. Former Prime Minister Rukahana Rugunda praised Mbabazi, acknowledging the challenges of stepping into his shoes at the Office of the Prime Minister.

Analysts view Mbabazi’s return to the fold as inevitable, highlighting the transient nature of political enmities and reinforcing the notion that in politics, alliances can shift.
