In a landmark move in 2014, when the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2013 was passed by Parliament and signed into law by President Museveni, Mwenda, alongside activists like Fox Odoi and Nicholas Opio, petitioned the Constitutional Court to overturn it. Their efforts bore fruit when the court, led by Acting Chief Justice Steven Kavuma, ruled in favor of nullifying the Act, citing parliamentary procedural flaws.
Undeterred by subsequent attempts to reintroduce similar legislation, Mwenda persisted in his legal battles. Even as Parliament passed the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, Mwenda and his allies returned to the courts to contest its validity, emphasizing the rights of consenting adults to engage in same-sex relationships without fear of prosecution.
During a televised debate on NTV in March 2023, Mwenda reiterated his stance, questioning the morality of criminalizing consensual relationships between adults. His unequivocal support for LGBTQ rights drew both admiration and criticism from the public.
However, recent events have added a new layer of complexity to Mwenda’s advocacy. Despite his public persona as a champion of progressive values, photos circulating online depict him participating in a traditional marriage ceremony, accompanied by government ministers Norbert Mao and Jim Muhwezi.
The revelation has sparked controversy, with many questioning the apparent dissonance between Mwenda’s personal life and his public advocacy. Critics accuse him of hypocrisy, suggesting that his vocal support for LGBTQ rights may not align with his actions.
In response to inquiries about the photos, Mwenda vehemently denied their authenticity, labeling those responsible for their circulation as deceitful and malicious. He expressed outrage at the invasion of his privacy and dismissed the accusations of hypocrisy as baseless and unfounded.
