Mathias Mpuuga, the erstwhile Leader of the Opposition in parliament, has affirmed his commitment to remain within the folds of the National Unity Platform (NUP), opting instead to champion reforms from within to shape the party into a “credible and proficient Government in waiting.”
During a press conference held on Tuesday, Mpuuga outlined his vision for a revitalized NUP, free from arbitrary practices such as obscurantism, nepotism, and corruption. He emphasized the need for internal conflict resolution mechanisms and the eradication of unethical behaviors like extortion and blackmail.
This declaration follows a tumultuous period marked by allegations of corruption that led to calls for Mpuuga’s resignation from a prominent parliamentary commission within his own party. Accusations surfaced regarding his purported solicitation of a Shs 500 million payment from the Commission, where he served as a member.
However, Mpuuga vehemently denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the allegations as baseless and unfounded. He expressed his dismay at the methods employed to tarnish his reputation, advocating for a more mature approach to resolving internal disputes within the party.
The Member of Parliament for Nyendo Mukungwe acknowledged the detrimental impact of the recent controversy on both NUP leaders and members. He stressed the importance of rebuilding public trust and showcasing the party’s capacity to lead Uganda towards meaningful change and transformation.
While Mpuuga refrained from commenting on the party leadership’s decision to recall him from the Parliamentary Commission, his unwavering dedication to advancing reforms within the NUP remains resolute.
