The serene Ndimo village nestled within the Mambasa territory of the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was brutally assaulted by terrorists belonging to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) on Friday, March 29, 2024. This horrifying incident resulted in the tragic loss of eight precious lives, including five pygmies, adding to the profound sorrow engulfing the region due to the incessant violence.

Mambasa Territory, ensconced in the Ituri Province of the DRC, continues to bear the brunt of prolonged conflict marked by unspeakable brutality, mass displacements, and mounting fatalities.

The Eastern DRC remains a tinderbox of conflict, with a myriad of armed factions vying for territorial supremacy, control over lucrative resources, and political hegemony. These factions comprise both indigenous militias and externally-backed groups.

Among the multitude of armed factions, the ADF stands out, being linked to the Islamic State (IS) network and operating extensively across the eastern expanse of the DRC. The ADF’s nefarious activities have inflicted untold suffering, further exacerbating the region’s already dire humanitarian plight.

Merely a month before this ruthless attack, suspected ADF militants wreaked havoc in Mayimoya, located in Beni territory, claiming the lives of eight individuals, including three women.

Originating as a Ugandan Muslim-majority rebel coalition in 1995, the ADF expanded its reach into the eastern DRC. Since then, the group’s heinous actions have led to the untimely demise of thousands of innocent civilians, with their reign of terror extending from North Kivu to the adjacent Ituri province.

In 2019, the ADF pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, thereby heightening their menace within the strife-torn region. In response to escalating tensions, the Ugandan and DRC armed forces jointly launched a military offensive dubbed “Operation Shuja” against the ADF in late 2021.

This operation was precipitated by twin suicide bombings in Kampala, attributed to the ADF, claiming the lives of at least seven individuals. Despite claims by the Ugandan military regarding the degradation of ADF capabilities, the frequency of attacks persists unabated, casting a pall of fear and uncertainty over the beleaguered region.
