President Museveni Says That It Is Important To Recognize People

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni emphasized the significance of acknowledging and appreciating individuals who contribute to society’s advancement, underscoring their role in fostering progress and inspiring others. Speaking at the Elders Mentorship/Leadership Awards luncheon 2024, held at State House Entebbe on March 28th, 2024, President Museveni commended Mr. Odrek Rwabwogo and his team for their initiative in recognizing such contributions.

The event, organized by the Office of the Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Duties, chaired by Mr. Rwabwogo, aimed to honor elders who have demonstrated exceptional service and leadership, driving positive change in Uganda. Under the theme “Modelling the right behavior for the youth of Africa in the 21st Century,” the ceremony celebrated 16 elders for their significant roles in the nation’s development.

Additionally, the occasion served as a platform to commemorate the late Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, former Speaker of Parliament, for his unwavering dedication to public service. Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi presented the late Oulanyah’s biography to his family during the event, highlighting his profound impact on Uganda’s political landscape.

President Museveni stressed the importance of accurate mentorship, rooted in a deep understanding of society, history, and the role of science and technology in driving social change. He credited the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government’s progress to its visionary approach and disciplined execution of solutions to address societal challenges.

Reflecting on the late Oulanyah’s journey, President Museveni praised his intellectual openness and alignment with the NRM’s vision, which propelled him to leadership positions within the party and the country. He emphasized the need for a unified approach to national development, transcending identity politics and prioritizing solutions that address citizens’ needs effectively.

Vice President Jesca Alupo echoed President Museveni’s sentiments, emphasizing the youth’s pivotal role in Africa’s transformation and the importance of nurturing their potential through mentorship and guidance. Hon. Tagesse Chafo Dullo, Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives of Ethiopia, conveyed solidarity with Uganda and underscored the shared commitment to fostering leadership grounded in integrity and courage.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao, praised Mr. Rwabwogo’s efforts in organizing the event and emphasized the need to cultivate leadership based on principles exemplified by the late Oulanyah. Mr. Rwabwogo reiterated the importance of honoring exemplary service by retired public servants, urging the youth to draw inspiration from their predecessors’ legacy.

Representatives from various sectors, including former Prime Ministers, government officials, and dignitaries, graced the event, underscoring the collective commitment to fostering leadership excellence and national development. The ceremony served as a testament to Uganda’s rich heritage of service and dedication to building a brighter future for generations to come.
