NUP Calls For An Urgent Meeting To Address The Shs 500m Saga

The shadow cabinet has collectively decided to draft a letter addressed to Ms. Anita Among, the Speaker of Parliament, urging her to promptly organize a meeting of the Parliamentary Service Commission. This assembly aims to tackle the pervasive allegations of corruption that have cast a shadow over the Legislature’s reputation in recent times.

Established by Article 87A of the Constitution, the Commission holds the responsibility of appointing, promoting, and exercising disciplinary control over individuals occupying public office within Parliament, among other functions.

During a press briefing at Parliament on Monday afternoon, Mr. Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition, emphasized the need for this commission meeting. He stated that it would provide a platform to seek clarification on various expenditures that have raised legal concerns.

“I have officially communicated with the Speaker, urging her to convene a Commission meeting where we can obtain comprehensive answers regarding these diverse expenditures,” remarked Ssenyonyi.

Allegations of corruption have recently surfaced in Uganda’s Parliament, prompting concerns about the integrity of the legislative body. The shadow cabinet has taken a stand, urging the Speaker, Ms. Anita Among, to swiftly convene a Parliamentary Service Commission meeting.

This meeting aims to address and clarify various expenditures that have raised legal questions, as the Legislature strives to uphold its reputation amid these corruption allegations.
