In the lead-up to the 2026 elections, the political arena in Mawokota is witnessing a renewed vigor as former Trade Minister Amelia Kyambadde reenters the fray, aiming to reclaim the seat lost to Mawokota North MP Hilary Kiyaga, popularly known as Hilderman, in 2021.

Kyambadde, now 69, has escalated her campaign against Hilderman, accusing him of falling short on his commitments to uplift the Mawokota community. During a recent appearance on an NTV talk show, she not only criticized his performance but also brought age into the equation, suggesting that Hilderman’s youthfulness may hinder a comprehensive understanding of the people’s needs.

Highlighting her viewpoint, Kyambadde remarked, “His leadership has been weak, and I don’t blame him because a person at that age, at times, you are not sure of what to do. But as a leader, you need a certain level of maturity; you have to grow in your level of thinking and become more selfless.”

She further emphasized the contrasting perspectives of a younger leader like Hilderman and a more seasoned one like herself, stating, “The needs of a young person are different from those of a mature person like me. As an older person, you don’t have a lot of greed for wealth; your thoughts are always with the people and trying to change your community.”

Kyambadde drew parallels between her extensive 10-year parliamentary tenure and Hilderman’s three years, asserting that developmental progress in their constituency has dwindled since her departure.

Reflecting on her past accomplishments, she mentioned securing funds through her Twezimbe Development Foundation to establish an HIV hospital, providing student scholarships, youth and women training programs, and supporting educational institutions and places of worship.

In stark contrast, she criticized Hilderman’s focus, alleging that his activities primarily revolve around attending funerals and weddings. “He unfortunately thinks that that is one way of serving his people,” Kyambadde remarked.

Undeterred, Kyambadde highlighted that numerous constituents have earnestly urged her to return as their representative, signaling a groundswell of support for her candidacy.
