John Ikechukwu Okafor, widely recognized as Mr. Ibu, left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s entertainment scene before his passing on 2 March 2024, at the age of 62. Born on 17 October 1961 in Umunekwu, a part of Nigeria’s former Eastern Region now located in Nkanu West L.G.A., Enugu State, Okafor’s journey to stardom was characterized by resilience and diverse experiences.
Following the demise of his father, Okafor moved to Sapele in 1974 to live with his brother. There, he engaged in various menial jobs to finance his education and provide for his family. From hairstyling to delving into photography and working in a crate production company, Okafor’s early life showcased his determination to overcome financial challenges.
Although initially admitted to the College of Education, Yola, financial constraints led him to withdraw. It was only later, once financially able, that he enrolled in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu. Throughout his life, Okafor’s resilience and pursuit of education reflected his commitment to personal growth.
Married twice, Mr. Ibu was a father to over 10 children, with the unfortunate loss of one. His prolific acting career comprised over 200 Nollywood films, with notable titles including “Mr. Ibu” (2004), “Mr. Ibu 2” (2005), “Mr. Ibu in London” (2005), and “Ibu in Prison” (2006), among others.
Beyond acting, Okafor briefly explored the world of music, releasing songs like “This Girl” and “Do You Know” on 15 October 2020. He even earned the nickname “Nigeria’s Borat,” showcasing his impact and unique persona in the entertainment industry.
In 2012, Okafor expressed strong views on homosexuality in Nollywood, likening it to a virus. His candid statements sparked discussions on societal perspectives within the Nigerian film industry.
In a challenging turn of events in October 2023, Okafor revealed his battle with a debilitating ailment that jeopardized one of his legs. Seeking support, he reached out to fans and the public for prayers and financial assistance. The Abubakar Bukola Saraki Foundation, led by the former Nigerian senate president, alleviated Okafor’s medical expenses. However, ongoing financial support was still needed for his hospital stay and further treatment abroad.
Tragically, in November 2023, Okafor underwent a leg amputation, undergoing seven surgeries to combat a relentless illness. The decision aimed at preserving his life and enhancing his chances of recovery, a testament to the challenges he faced in his final months.
