Yesterday, the internet was abuzz with shocking news as Bobi Wine unveiled a document detailing his convocation of a party meeting to address corruption allegations against the former leader of opposition and parliamentary commissioner, Hon Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba.
According to NUP’s official statement, Mpuuga admitted to receiving Shs500m from the parliamentary commission as an appreciation token under the guise of a ‘Service Award.’ Following this acknowledgment, Mpuuga issued an apology and was urged to resign from his prominent position as parliamentary commissioner.
Despite speculation among political observers about Mpuuga’s resignation, he defiantly responded to Bobi Wine and NUP, asserting that he will not step down, challenging them to await the 2026 elections if they wish to replace him as parliamentary commissioner.
In a strongly-worded statement shared on his social media accounts, Mathias Mpuuga from Nyendo Mukungwe clarified that the Shs500m he received was not a bribe or an act of corruption, dismissing his party’s characterization of the payments as such.
Mpuuga’s statement emphasized, “To call such payments corruption is the highest level of spite, double standards, and deliberate misrepresentation to the public and membership of the Party on a purely selfish mission.” He argued that if these payments were deemed corrupt, every current and previous MP would be obligated to refund similar gratuity or honoraria payments from the Parliamentary Commission.
In a bold stance against Bobi Wine and the entire National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership, Mpuuga declared his refusal to resign. He also addressed issues surrounding his demotion from the Leader of Opposition role, attributing it to unfounded allegations and a plot to tarnish his reputation, involving the hiring of bloggers to insult and abuse him.
Mpuuga’s resolute statement concluded, “I accordingly decline the cowardly call on me to resign as a Parliamentary Commissioner, based on spite, envy, and deliberate misrepresentation. The general public is aware and alive to the internal intrigue and machinations unfortunately within this young party over the last 21/2 years, during my occupation of the covered office of the LOP. It became the official style of different party leaders to undermine my work, including hiring of bloggers to abuse and insult my person.”
