In the most recent iteration of the widely-discussed ranking circulating across digital platforms, Webometrics, the foremost academic ranking authority for Higher Education Institutions globally since 2004, has unveiled its latest assessment of the premier universities in Africa and worldwide.
As part of their routine biannual evaluation spanning two decades, Webometrics has meticulously appraised Ugandan universities, segregating them from the most outstanding to the least commendable. Demonstrating their commitment to an impartial, transparent, and open scientific evaluation conducted by the Cybermetrics Lab (Spanish National Council, CSIC), the initiative aims to offer dependable, comprehensive, up-to-date, and valuable insights into the global standing of universities based on their web presence and impact.
As of January 2024, Makerere University, an institution owned by the Ugandan government, continues to hold the distinguished title of Uganda’s top-ranking university. Trailing closely behind is Kampala International University (KIU), a private institution securing the second position within the country. The third spot is claimed by Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), followed by Kyambogo in the fourth position and Gulu University in the fifth position.
In the sixth position stands Busitema University, while Kabale University secures the seventh spot, and Uganda Martyrs University attains the eighth position. The ninth place is occupied by The Islamic University in Uganda, with Ndejje University rounding up the top ten.
Taking the 11th position is Mountains of The Moon, recently brought under government administration, followed by Makerere University Business School (MUBS) at the 12th position. Bishop Stuart University claims the 13th spot, with Uganda Christian University securing the 14th position in the Webometrics ranking.
