UPDF Soldier Dies In A Road Accident Along Mukono-Kayunga Road

In a tragic incident at Mpoma Satellite station along Mukono-Kayunga road, a 30-year-old soldier, identified as Lt Cpl Kundo Obedi, lost his life when the motorcycle he was riding, along with two passengers, collided with a vehicle. Lt Cpl Kundo Obedi, a student at Uganda Military Engineering College (UMEC) in Lugazi town, Buikwe District, was on motorcycle RA 229084 when the collision occurred with a Toyota Gaia driven by Egyptian national Abdel Muhassen Kamal, resulting in the immediate demise of the soldier and serious injuries to the two passengers.

The collision unfolded as Lt Cpl Kundo Obedi attempted to overtake two other vehicles on the road. The two injured passengers were swiftly transported to Kawolo and Naggalama hospitals for medical attention, while the soldier’s body was taken to Bombo military hospital. The involved vehicles were towed to the Mukono police yard.

This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder for road users to exercise caution and be considerate of others. The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyango, emphasized the need for increased awareness on road safety.

In a broader context, the latest traffic accident report as of July 2023 reveals alarming statistics, with 432 registered crashes. Among these, 97 cases were fatal, 202 classified as serious, and 133 deemed minor. The fatalities included 42 individuals on motorcycles, comprising 13 passengers and 29 riders, along with 40 pedestrians.

These figures underscore the critical importance of promoting road safety measures and fostering a collective responsibility among all road users to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
