Following the ministerial briefing conducted yesterday to discuss the performance of candidates who undertook the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations, the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) and the Ministry of Education have officially released the results, making them accessible to the public through the usual channels.

The recent announcement at State House Nakasero highlighted significant developments, with a notable increase in candidates achieving Division 1 (D1) and a corresponding decline in the failure rate. Impressively, almost 329,939 candidates (95.9%) demonstrated success, enabling them to progress to the next educational levels after successfully completing the UCE examinations.

The released results indicate that out of the 361,695 candidates who participated in the UCE Exams last year, 64,782 candidates (17.9%) attained Division One (D1). This marks a notable improvement from the previous year, where 46,667 candidates (13.5%) achieved the same grade.

Further breakdown of the results reveals that 85,566 candidates (23.7%) secured Division Two (D2), 83,454 candidates (23.1%) achieved Division Three (D3), and 112,923 candidates (31.2%) successfully obtained Division Four (D4). However, 14,879 candidates (4.1%) did not meet the required standards and failed the examinations.

Among the total of 364,469 candidates who registered for the exams, 180,471 (49.5%) were male, and 183,998 candidates (50.5%) were female. Surprisingly, only 361,695 candidates appeared for the exams, with over 2,700 candidates missing the opportunity and not participating in the examination sessions.

Consistent with previous years, female candidates outperformed males in the English language. Conversely, male candidates exhibited superior performance in subjects such as History, Geography, Sciences, and Commerce.

These results mark the conclusion of the assessment process under the old curriculum. The Ministry of Education is set to unveil a strategic plan for the transition from lower secondary to upper secondary education, adopting the new competence-based curriculum.

In a final opportunity, UNEB is extending the chance for candidates interested in repeating or taking the 2024 exams under the old curriculum at a district level. Registration is open for candidates to sit for the exams in June, while the inaugural exams under the new curriculum are scheduled between October and November 2024.
