On the fateful day of January 30, 2024, Beni in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo witnessed a harrowing incident resulting in the tragic loss of at least eight lives, accompanied by the abduction of 30 individuals. The assailants, linked to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), ruthlessly targeted multiple villages in Beni and its vicinity. Employing bladed weapons, they mercilessly killed civilians, including five individuals engaged in prayer within a Branhamist Pentecostal church.
The Mayor of Oicha Commune, Nicolas Kikuku, somberly confirmed the calamity, disclosing that eight victims, including the Branhamist Christians who fell during their worship, were laid to rest at the Oicha hospital morgue. Collaborating this grim reality, Darius Syahira, a spokesperson for the local civil society, affirmed the attack, and the lifeless bodies found their place in the morgue.
Disturbing reports unfold the sinister details of the assault, indicating that the assailants, notorious for their incursions into Eastern DRC, engaged in heinous activities such as burning houses, slaying residents, and pillaging goods. This recent atrocity follows a string of similar incidents, notably an attack on January 27, 2024, where 32 lives were claimed, including five parishioners, in the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Both incidents were attributed to the ADF and the Islamic State group.
Since 2021, the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri have been placed under a state of emergency, replacing civilian authorities with military administration to combat the persistent threat posed by armed groups. Despite joint military operations named “Shujaa,” initiated by Kampala and Kinshasa in late 2021, the rebels continue to perpetrate atrocities.
The ADF, entrenched in eastern DRC since the mid-1990s, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in 2019, designating itself as the “Central Africa Province.” Despite efforts to quell their activities, the rebels persist, prompting concern and condemnation from both local and international communities.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, emerging from a relatively calm period following tense elections, has experienced a resurgence of deadly attacks in the Beni territory. On January 23, another assault claimed five lives, further intensifying the region’s security challenges.
The ADF, previously accused of deadly bombings in Kampala in 2021, leading to Uganda’s intervention in eastern Congo, remains an enduring threat. President Yoweri Museveni issues a stern warning, urging the ADF to surrender or face severe consequences, highlighting the commitment of the Uganda Peoples Defence Force under the agreement with the DRC government to pursue them relentlessly.
