Former Makerere University Guild President Graduates After 10 Years Of Studying

Makerere University celebrated the graduation of Papa Salim, its 84th guild president, who successfully completed a decade-long academic journey of 10 Years. Among the 212 graduates from the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources, and Biosecurity (COVAB), Papa earned his bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine after 10 years of dedicated study.

Serving as the guild president in the academic year 2017/2018, Papa faced challenges, including missing marks, but persisted in his academic pursuits.Residing in Nsibirwa Hall, also known as Northcote Hall, Papa embarked on his university journey in 2013 with an anticipated graduation in 2019. However, external business endeavors, particularly in money remittance, occupied his time while awaiting graduation.

Reflecting on his journey, Papa emphasized the importance of persistence and hope, acknowledging the support of his lecturers. As a government-sponsored student for the initial five years, he took responsibility for his tuition in subsequent years.Expressing his joy on graduation day, Papa congratulated his fellow graduates, emphasizing the profound significance of passing through the gates of Makerere University.

He acknowledged the initial disappointment of missing out on graduation but highlighted the resilience required to overcome such challenges.Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the Makerere University vice chancellor, clarified the institution’s policy on the duration of stay, allowing students to extend their course duration within specified limits. According to Prof Nawangwe, Papa complied with the timeframe, including the statutory time for the program plus two additional years.

Papa gained prominence when he and his guild council vehemently opposed a proposal to increase tuition fees by 45% to 91%, affecting students joining the university in the 2018/2019 academic year. Their strong stance, demonstrated through protests, led to the suspension of the proposed policy.The week-long graduation ceremony, began on Monday, is set to conclude tomorrow, marking the culmination of academic achievements for numerous students, including Papa Salim.
